Tranmere Rovers face Boreham Wood today, but that isn’t the only reason to have the Saturday fever. St Patrick’s Day is finally upon us and it’s time to reveal who you voted as your favourite Irish player.
The nominations for the accolade are: Alan Mahon, John Aldridge, Liam O’Brien and David Kelly.
We can now reveal that your favourite Irish player who has played for Tranmere Rovers is none other than Aldridge!

The 59-year old scoops the award having won 59% of your votes in our Twitter poll. Second place was tightly contested between Mahon (17%) and Kelly (15%), while O’Brien got 9%.
Aldridge was a key figure for Tranmere throughout the 1990s, breaking the club’s goalscoring record in his first season (40), and almost helped the club get into the Premier League in 1993, 1994 and 1995.
He became a player-manager with the Super Whites in 1996, before hanging up his boots for good in 1998. Aldo’s reign lacked silverware, but Rovers were involved in many giant-killings while he was manager, none more so than their 2000 League Cup run.
