TranmereTalk Awards 2018: Joel Lampkin’s selections

By Joel Lampkin

In a season with everything still to play for the Tranmere Rovers players have performed admirably and writer Joel Lampkin selects his choices for the various categories below:

Signing of the Season: Selection – Ollie Banks

With Tranmere in a midfielder crisis in late 2017 the recruitment of Ollie Banks helped ease any potential disaster and rather than a stop-gap, the loanee quickly became an integral part of the squad. It was a big shame when he returned to his parent club as his partnership with Ollie Norburn was incredible at times but he left a lasting impression on the fans and club.

Winner: Ollie Norburn

Best Moment of the Season: Selection – McNulty Maradona turn

Steve McNulty has the most technical skill of any player I have ever witnessed before and his ability to turn and beat players comes as a shock not only to the opposition but sometimes to his own fans as well. The veteran has demonstrated that he is a classy defender throughout the season but against Macclesfield he took it a step further by spinning two players and leaving them for dead, summing up his confidence in two incredible actions.

Winner: James Norwood scoring a one-on-one

Most Underrated Player: Selection – Ritchie Sutton

Playing alongside a player with as much class as McNulty means that the spotlight will not always be on you but Ritchie Sutton has proven that he has as much quality as anyone as he has been a silent protector of Tranmere’s back four. With header, blocking, tackling and even an accurate long ball or two, the work of the 31-year-old does not always get the credit he deserves.

Winner: Ritchie Sutton

Best Game of the season: Selection – Wrexham Away

The Wrexham away fixture ended in a 1-1 draw but the fixture that day did not matter, both sets of fans rose to the occasion and sung for the entire 90 minutes. Thousands of fans packed the stadium to achieve the biggest attendance of the season so far and created a spectacle to remember, plus Andy Cook’s header was great.

Winner: Ebbsfleet 3-0

Goal of the Season: Selection – Andy Cook vs Wrexham

Andy Cook and his magic hat go hand-in-hand and when he wants to win a ball, he is going to make it as hard as possible for any player. With his desire and ability, Cook is as close to the perfect striker you could get, his partnership with Norwood works perfectly but his goal against Wrexham and everything that it represented shows just how much of an asset he is to Tranmere.

Winner: Adam Buxton Free Kick vs Sutton United (A)

Player of the Season: Selection- Connor Jennings

The midfielder went on a scoring spree of about seven goals in five games and was a massive asset in Tranmere climbing the league rankings. His silky footwork always offer a way out of tight situations and add to this his pace, heading ability and passing quality and you have the complete package, oh and he never gives the ball awayyyy!

Winner: Adam Buxton
