Tranmere Rovers sit third in the National League with just nine games to play, and they’ve had an excellent season to date, but who are the players that have stood out to fans over the past eight months? We take a look below:
Adam Buxton – Defender
Rovers fan Mischa Parry perfectly summarised Buxton in her tweet, describing him as “Mr Consistent”, “invaluable player”, “always leaves everything out there”, “calm and aware in defence”, “able to bomb on and beat players” and “can pick out a pass or cross”, while Ollie Melville thinks he has been “consistently solid” and “great at the back all season.”
Invaluable player, always leaves everything out there
Calm & aware in defence, able to bomb on & beat players, & can’t half pick out a pass/cross

Buxton has played 30 from a possible 37 games this season, missing out a couple of times through injury at the beginning of the season, but has since gone on to play a big role in a pretty settled back four for Rovers as their form picked up around the time of his return to the side.
He is versatile – he can play both full-back positions and fill in at centre half if needed – and can get up and down the wing to provide an attacking outlet, making him a dangerous asset for Rovers that they’ve been able to utilise for the majority of the campaign.
He also scored the crucial last-minute penalty in the smash-and-grab 3-2 win over Maidstone three weeks ago, proving he’s also a player for the big occasion.
Steve McNulty – Defender
McNulty is not only a true leader on the field, but is also the captain of the side, and for good reason. He’s played 33 times this season, missing just four games, and is undoubtedly one of the first names on the team sheet.
Between him, Buxton and Ritchie Sutton they’ve formed a formidable and settled back four that has been a huge contributor to Rovers’ success this year, and although defenders don’t always get the praise their performances warrant, this fan vote has clearly highlighted the fact that the Super White Army definitely acknowledge and respect the performances of their key defenders.
McNulty for me.. think he’s a brilliant player and a great captain always encouraging the other players, also he didn’t miss one game following that horrific leg injury not many of them would be able to do that 👌

Ritchie Sutton – Defender
As we alluded to earlier, Ritchie Sutton has also been a key player in that settled back four that has helped Rovers climb the table over the past few months.
Sutton, often playing alongside McNulty in the heart of the defence, has played an amazing 36 times this season, missing just one game.
He’s also been invaluable going forward, scoring four times, making him the joint 4th top scorer on the team.
Thought Ritchie Sutton would’ve been in there. Had a great season 👍

Rovers fan Mike said: “He had a great season.”
He’s a veteran of the team at 31 years old and, like McNulty, is a leader both on and off the field.
