Sutton United vs Tranmere Rovers: Three Stand Out Stars

By Josh Roberts

Tranmere’s promotion push back to the Football League took a massive step in the right direction after beating fellow promotion chasers Sutton United on Saturday.

After some poor form away from Prenton Park, it was a comprehensive victory over a side that are known for being tough to beat at home. So here are our three stand out stars from the 1 – 3 victory.

Connor Jennings

Jennings has been in fantastic form of late for Rovers and he was a massive part of helping Tranmere to take all three points at the weekend.

The no.11 exclusively revealed to us earlier in the month that the side would give it a “good go” over the Christmas Period and it has started in fantastic fashion.

It was his strike that put the Super White’s back into the lead in the first half with a sumptuous volley from outside the area that wouldn’t look out of place on a goal of the season shortlist.

It wasn’t just his goal but his presence of mind to track back and help out his defence and his good work down the left flank all afternoon that earns him a place on our list.

Steve McNulty

After conceding twice against bottom of the league Solihull in the FA trophy on Monday, I’m sure McNulty will have wanted to get back out onto the pitch and rectify things.

And that is exactly what he did. Marshalling his back four and being a constant rock in the defence, Steve made amends and Monday’s result has been put firmly to the back of the mind.

Despite conceding on the day, it was a much more assured performance from the defensive unit but McNulty in particular who shone at centre half.

On his day, there are very few better centre halves at this level, and thankfully for Tranmere, Saturday was yet another match when the skipper was on his game.

Ollie Banks

Olly Banks vs GatesheadIt is getting to a point now with Banks were there are less superlatives every week that describe his performances, such has been the impact of the on-loan Oldham man.

Banks has come in and made the centre midfield role his own and Tranmere have been all the better for it.

His size, presence and skill at times shows why he was a regular at Oldham earlier in the season, he dominates the midfield with his size but has the skill to get attacks flowing.

This was the case against Sutton who had no answers for him and it’s only going to benefit Tranmere that he has extended his loan deal for an extra month even though the likes of Jeff Hughes and Jay Harris returning.
