As Tranmere Rovers prepare themselves for an eagerly anticipated FA Cup first round clash against Peterborough United, one man who featured in Rovers’ 5-0 defeat against The Posh back in 2013 is feeling very confident ahead of the tie.
Rovers defender Liam Ridehalgh, who is now into his fifth season at the club feels that the sides’ recent performances are a good enough reason to be confident ahead of what will ultimately be a very tough away test on Saturday against a side they are yet to register a win against in FA Cup format.
The Super Whites have begun to find their feet domestically after a poor start to the campaign, and the recent 4-2 victory against FC Halifax Town last weekend appears to have created a real positive and optimistic atmosphere in and around the club.
Looking ahead to the game against Peterborough United at London Road stadium this weekend, he spoke of his optimism going into the game with a victory firmly in his sights.
“I’m very confident, our performances have been very good recently – and if we can replicate those on Saturday then we’ll hopefully win.”
Reflecting on one of his very few favourite FA Cup memories, Ridehalgh recalled a memorable trip down to National League side Dover Athletic during his playing days with boyhood club Huddersfield Town in 2011.
“I haven’t done very well in the FA Cup but I enjoyed it when we went down to Dover when I was playing at Huddersfield Town, it was a good atmosphere down there.”
The last time that Tranmere Rovers managed to get into the illustrious third round of the competiton was back in 2014-15 season, where they were thumped 6-2 by Premier League outfit Swansea City at Prenton Park.
Speaking about the magnitude of the FA Cup, the 26-year-old was in a buoyant mood with regards to looking ahead to the later rounds of the competition, with the man from Halifax hoping for one of the elite sides in the latter rounds.
“It is obviously a big competition, hopefully if we can get through on Saturday we can get through again and get one of the big boys in the third round, that’s obviously what we all want.”
When asked about what team he would most like to face should the Super White Army advance into the third-round, the defender had no doubt in his mind as to who it would be, highlighting the confidence within himself and his team.
“Manchester United, no question.”
